Brian C. Chu, Ph.D. is the featured presenter of the "Cognitive and Behavioral Approaches for Anxious Youth: Evidence-Based Strategies for Practice Settings" workshop on Oct. 26, 2009. This clinical training is offered by CPC Behavioral Healthcare with co-sponsorship by CentraState Medical Center -- Health Awareness Center.
Anxiety is one of the most common emotional disorders to impact children and adolescents. The workshop will present current knowledge of anxiety, its phenomenology and impact on youth, plus demonstrate current best practices in assessment and therapy techniques within a cognitive-behavioral framework (CBT). Mixture of didactics, discussion and interactive activities planned. Emphasis will be placed on the benefit of evidence-based practice. Participants will be taught to recognize the signs of anxiety in youth of different ages and to effectively involve families when appropriate.
Participants will be able to:
- Understand the benefit of using evidence-based strategies to treat anxiety disorders in children and adolescents
- Make a differential diagnosis of anxiety disorders based on the client/consumer’s developmental level
- Effectively apply cognitive-behavioral interventions in the treatment of youth with anxiety disorders
- Effectively apply appropriate interventions for working with the families of youth with anxiety disorders
Attendees will receive 6 Clinical CEUs.

Individual CB strategies I: Will describe specific strategies targeting work with individual youth, demonstrating specific techniques from Kendall’s Coping Cat protocol and using clinical vignettes and role plays with attendees. Strategies to be covered include: psychoeducation, affective education and relaxation exercises, identifying anxious automatic thoughts and developing coping thoughts.

Individual CB strategies II: Strategies to be covered include: problem solving, self-evaluation and reward, developing a fear hierarchy, and enacting imaginal and in vivo exposures.

Working with parents: Will describe and demonstrate interventions targeting parents of anxious youth, including: psychoeducation, helpful parenting styles and strategies, and developing reward systems to promote non-anxious approach behaviors

* Throughout the workshop, the presenter will demonstrate how strategies developed and tested in research settings can be translated into user-friendly, flexible interventions that can be readily adapted for use within attendees’ customary practice. Questions and discussion will be encouraged throughout in lieu of a single or periodic question-and-answer segment.
